Community Waste Solutions Water Quality Assessment

Community Waste Solutions Water Quality Data Summary

TWC conducted water quality samples at two locations along the stream that drains the Haines Landfill.  The two locations were just upstream of Riley Rd.  and upstream of Dick Flegel’s house before it crosses Beach Rd.  The tests were looking for Enterococci to determine if there was a problem with human waste stream contamination exiting the landfill.  This work was contracted by Tom Hall the owner of the landfill and the data was distributed to the Haines Borough, Alaska DEC, and interested community members.

Water quality samples collected using Enterococci as the indicator bacteria.  The recreational water quality limit for Enterococci is the geometric mean for five samples in 30 days of 33/100ml   Collection sites are shown on the attached map.

Enterococci=fecal bacteria indicator typically more human-specific.  EPA recommends as a useful indicator in freshwater.

MPN=most probable number

Geometric Mean:  Indicates the central tendency or typical value of a set of numbers.  For example the geometric mean of two numbers, say 2 and 8, is the square root of their product which = 4.
